Hey Gang -

I just wanted to take a few moments of your time to point you in the direction of my new music blog, which I've been meaning to do for quite some time. It's called Chicago is Mildly Interesting. I figured it make for a nice contrast to Minneapolis Fucking Rocks. I hope you check it out. I've got a review of Head of Femur, a preview of tonight's Oxford Collapse show at the Abbey Pub, video of Sybris performing live on Fearless TV, and more. I hope you check it out and leave a comment telling me what you think. In the meantime, here's a playlist of some of my favorite, lesser-known artists from Chicago. I've also done a Compare-and-contrast Late Greats style thing with "The Ballad of El Goodo", including both Big Star's original and Chicago power-pop group Sunday Runner's cover. I hope you listen and enjoy. I'll very much still be doing this blog, so hakuna matata, music fans young and old. You'll now just have two blogs to read :) (I'm such a doofus).

Listen to songs at the top of the post, then go to Chicago is Mildly Interesting for more, including contact info.

Top Ten Tracks on Elbo.ws Reviewed in 50 Words or Less: 7/16/8--7/31/08

1. Calexico - "Two Silver Trees"

Download: Calexico - "Two Silver Trees"

With a brief, string-plucked melody that recalls the feeling of lucid dream, Calexico slowly develops cognizance by adding a subtle rumble of a drumbeat, accordion, and whispered vocals. The hushed atmosphere of the verses borders into Western-themed camp, but the orchestral-pop in the chorus is positively luminescent.

Grade: B+

2. Conor Oberst - "Danny Callahan"

Download: Conor Oberst - "Danny Callahan"

The slight swing in the beat helps give Conor Oberst's first solo effort a breezy, alt-country boogie that is able to charm so easily as to allow no depression to set in. (This despite the tragic subject in the narration). However, this is certainly familiar, both to fans of Bright Eyes and Bob Dylan.

Grade: B-

3. Cold War Kids - "Something is Not Right With Me"

Download: Cold War Kids - "Something Is Not Right With Me"

Finally, some truth in advertising in the music world. This track sounds like someone doing the ole' grab-twist-pull mechanism on Ben Folds. So how is it that my nuts hurt?

Grade: D

4. The Walkman - "In The New Year"

Download: The Walkman - "In The New Year"

The woozy balladry of The Walkmen's new song is the second in a row to hold a debt to Bob Dylan's radical snarl, but with any intellectual edges scrubbed off with a druggy guitar-fuzz. Reverb-heavy production touches provide an impeccable foundation, the song itself is merely competent. It never really begun, baby blue.

Grade: C+

5. Kings of Leon - "Crawl"

Download: Kings of Leon -"Crawl"

After teasing the audience with a hint of the avant-garde (the distorted bassline iis right out of Bjork's "Army of Me"), the Southern-Rock apologists quickly settle into familiar territory with Who-inspired 2-chord blast of power chords not unlike "The Seeker". Doesn't search high, not does it hit low. Turns out I don't need to ask Timothy Leary about shit. The Kings of Leon got him covered.

Grade: B

6. Lackthereof - "Last November"

Download: Lackthereof - "Last November"

To borrow from Eve 6--bet you didn't see that one comin--(the)Lackthreof leaves me...well, not empty inside. Just mildly indifferent, for the most part. Experimental collages of sound shouldn't be this ordinary.

Grade: C

7. Buffertlibre DJ - "Rewinded"

Download: Buffetlibre Djs - "Rewinded"

You mean I have to listen to all of this? And why am I not seeing Slimer yet? This is some bullshit. Not a bad interpolation of songs though. But Girl Talk is more imaginative.

Grade: B

8. Dr. Dog - "The Old Days"

Download: Dr Dog - "The Old Days""

"The Old Days" starts out with the easy-going vocals of reggae on top of a collage of melodious, orchestra psych-pop, before a honky-tonk breakdown and a supernova of sound eclipse the song's laid-back beginnings. This song is nothing if not breezy insouciance.

Grade: B+

9. Parts and Labor - "Nowheres Nigh"

Download: Parts and Labor - "Nowheres Nigh"

Taking the opportunity to evolve musically presented after drummer Christopher Weingarten's departure, the formerly excellent Brooklyn-based sonic scrap-artists opt for a less fractured, more structured approach. A turn to the conventional that was not necessary, with a melody that's poorly cribbed from the Bob Mould playbook.

Grade: C

10. Tricky - "Council Estate (Drums of Death Remix")

Download: Tricky - "Council Estate (Drums Of Death Remix)"

The remix of Tricky's first work in five years, trip-hop titan Tricky skitters with oscillating bleeps-and-bloops for an apocalyptic party jam. Not without merit, but I am more curious to hear the original version. Without it, one can't really appreciated the changes in the remix.

Grade: B-

Hey there readers. Once in a while, when the amount of MP3s I need to write up pile up high on my digital desk, I make a playlist of all the songs I've gotten. This is one of them. Rather than talk about them, I've decided to let you readers take hold of the discussion as a means of stimulating the comments section. Its just basically been reader Jon Jon wandering the comment Earth like Kane from Kung Fu. So leave a hullaboo and get the discussion started. Tell us what you think about these songs.

Also, we're looking for writers! We're unfortunately unable to pay you anything but gratitude. But if you're interesting in contributing, email jon@minneapolisfuckingrocks.com with your writing samples. We will get back to you soon.

Alright, have at it!

Mini Hip-Hop Playlist

Hey there neighbors. I'd thought I'd make a little hip-hop playlist of some tracks I've been really into these past few days. First off is a remix of Erykah Badu's "The Healer", featuring Pharaohe Monch, who last year released one of my favorite record of 2007, Desire; next up, shit-hot rappers The Cool Kids with an unreleased Bake Sale track called "Unos". Finally, two local tracks: Dodi Phy's "The Truth", featuring Muja Messiah; and electro-hip-hop act Mux Mool, with a track called "Insecure Drum".

All of these songs are fan-frickin-tastic.

Buy Mux Mool's Drum EP here

Thanks to Nah Right and reader Jon Jon for pointing these out.

Catch-Up Playlist (Or: Finally, I Can Clean Up My Desktop!)

(Mason Jennings)

Good news, everyone: Your favorite pretentious internet writer has found himself some employment. The bad news? Uh, MFR hasn't exactly been a hotbed of breaking news. As if it ever was. HA! However, since I have some time off before I start my new job on Monday, I thought I would take the time to make a Catch-Up Playlist of all the tracks that have broken since I started a brief temp job last Thursday (as well as some others that have been sitting on my desktop for a long, long time). There's going to be some commentary with all of the tracks, but not a whole lot*, as you've undoubtedly heard these songs already. Think of it as a more scatterbrained "50 Words or Less" feature. All of the MP3s have been organized into different categories for your exploring convenience.

And with that out of the way, here we go:

Singer/Songwriters:

Download: Mason Jennings - "Fighter Girl"
Download: Aimee Mann - "Thirty One Today"
Download: Brendan Canning - "Hit The Wall"

On a local note, singer/songwriter Mason Jennings debuted a new song from his forthcoming record In The Ever on I Am Fuel, You Are Friends. The song all but invites comparisons to another famous Minnesotan musician who sang with a seemingly lackadaisical drawl and wrote folk-flavored tunes. Obviously, there's none of Zimmy's revolutionary edge, but the song is perfectly pleasant listen for the end of spring time. But amiability doesn't equal greatness, and while "Figther Girl" is totally listenable acoustic-guitar driven folk-pop, it also won't change the world either.

A similar reaction can be elicited from singer-songwriter Aimee Mann's new song, "Thirty-One Today". Mann is too gifted a songwriter to create anything actively mediocre, but those listeners familiar with her past work won't be blown away by the additions of pseudo-New Wave keyboard flourishes. The lush nature of that instrumentation does juxtapose nicely against the bitter refrain.

That contrast also serves to fuel Brendan Canning's brilliant new song, "Hit A Wall", from his set-for-July entry in the Broken Social Scene Presents Series. The song absolutely reaches its dreamy pinnacle when the lyrics turn to loss and regret with the lines "use to have it all/then it went away." Maybe the narrator "Hit a Wall" regarding his personal life, but s/he should be at least consoled by the fantastically romantic sound collages sountracking the story. I used to think Kevin Drew was responsible for BSS' grandiose sounds. Now, I'm not so sure.

Gaze off your shoes and stay a while

Download: Grizzly Bear - "While You Wait for the Others"
Download: This Is Ivy League - "The Richest Kids"
Download: Nine Inch Nails - "Echoplex"
Download: No Age - "Eraser" (Live in Juan's Basement)

For a more retro kind of wistful, retro ethereality, new songs from This Is Ivy League and Grizzly Bear recall such musical luminaries as the Beach Boys and The Zombies. But while the former is a well-written homage, the latter, much like Garth Marhenghi, points the way forward for humanity. "Others" is the logical step forward from Yellow House and the Friend EP, and perhaps one of the best songs of the year.

While Grizzly Bear and This Is Ivy League may be two bands that try and dabble in transcendental pop, there are darker forces at play in the second single, given away for free, from Nine Inch Nails' website. The song, "Echoplex", starts with jagged, treble-heavy guitar-and-bass lines before adding various atmospheric touches while repeating lyrics fraught with frustration ("my voice just echoes off these walls") until they become a cathartic mantra. The effort is relatively subdued, and continues in the more mature direction that Reznor has taken in the 21st Century; there are tiny bursts of Eno-esque sonic experimentation. All in all, this is a solid, if a little perfunctory at times, track.

While we're on the subject of being perfunctory, the performance that Noo-York ambient-punkers No Age gave at Juan's Basement of "Eraser" (the studio version of which we told you about a while ago), from their new record Nouns, matches the recorded version perfectly. Perhaps watching the band perform live in the flesh would have made the listening experience much more visceral, but on this rendition, the changes are minimal at best. Good stuff, to be sure, but is it necessary?

Its been a long time since you've rock and rolled

Download: Pharoahe Monch - "Broken Heart"
Download: Stereolab - "Three Women"
Download: Os Mutantes - "Mutantes Depois"

"Echoplex", and the album from which it comes, The Slip, has been receiving enormous attention for its unorthodox release method. Is this the end of the old model, or will the CD become the Hillary Clinton to MP3's Barack Obama? Just like in real-life politics, it may be hard to say.

One thing's for certain though: After the experience rapper Pharoahe Monch with his labels (nine years between his debut album and last year's stunning comeback Desire) may want to take notes on the new model. Perhaps he already has, after debuting a new tune via hip-hop blog Nah Right.

"Broken Heart" is about, well, you know. And yet, the tale of a gal who goes from being voted most likely to succeed to "sucking seeds" (gasp! You've scandalized my virgin eyes, Monch.) is deeply affecting, because Monch, rapping above bittersweet double-stops and a smooth, syncopated bass line, spares no one, not even himself, in detailing the demise of a girl he once knew. "Broken Heart" continues the red hot streak that Monch has been on, with his fiery flow propelling the mid-tempo track to its irresistible conclusion. The fact that the wait between his new material and his last output might be shorter should surely please many hip-hop fans.

While 4 years between albums pales in comparison to 9 years, those who've been waiting patiently for a new offering from Stereolab have still been frothing at the mouth for new material from the English Krautrock-cum-lounge-pop band. With the band set to release Chemical Chords this year, it's no wonder that the first track from it, "Three Women", has been greeted with rabid enthusiasm. And with good reason. Whether you've been with this group from the beginning, or just heard about them through the High Fidelity Soundtrack, listeners should be greatly pleased by the song. That's because the song sounds like pretty much everything else that Stereolab has written. However, when the results have been this consistent over the years, who are we to complain?

The last time Os Mutantes put out anything at all, people who are parents now weren't even born yet. So much can happen in 36 years. And yet, if you happen to be Tropicalia legends, it would seem that the best course of action is to pick up where you left off. "Mutantes Depois" does that and then some. The song is wholly submerged in 60s folk (in the verses) and psychedelia, with the latter rearing its awesome head during "Depois" gloriously catastrophic breakdown. Welcome back, Mutantes. You've been missed.

New Bands (or, at least, new music)

Download: Thank You - "Empty Legs"
Download: The Accidental - "Dream For Me"
Download: Gentleman Auction House - "Book of Matches"
Download: The Music Tapes - "Majesty"

Chicago indie stalwarts Thrill Jockey have made two new MP3s available. They come from acts who will be making their debut releases with the home of Tortoise, The Fiery Furances, and Bobby Conn. Thank You, a trio from Baltimore, don't quite have enough throbbing polyrhythmic insanity to qualify as "math-rock" (or math-metal), but many of the same reference points and touchtones are there. The instrumental "Empty Legs" begins with a drum fill that Max Roach himself might have played, but the track expands into more diverse terrain, including organ fills, intertwining rhythms, and a pulsating bass line. As corny as it is, I'm gonna go there. No, Thank You!

The other TJ track is much more straightforward, in terms of structure and melody. Ironic, isn't it, that they're called The Accidental? This newly formed collective pretty much sounds like band member Sam Genders day job Tunng, but without any experimental, electronic touches. The result is folk music that is ultimately unremarkable.

Much more effective is the new song from The Music Tapes, an Elephant Six offshoot of (former?) Neutral Milk Hotel member Julian Koster. The track suggests post-E6 psychedelic-folk bands like Animal Collective, or even the shambolic, no-fi pop of Chicago group The Bird Names. Lush is most definitely the buzzword here.

Speaking of buzz, St. Louis-based Gentleman Auction House's brand of insanely, inexplicably catchy indie-pop should be setting the indie world on fire in T-Minus Now. The septet, who this week put out an EP titled Book of Matches, makes a huge ruckus while allowing enough space for funk (check out the minimalist, but pervasive, bass groove of the title track) and R&B influences to slowly creep in, giving tracks that otherwise might be average a greater shape and form. I'm very much looking forward to a full-length from this band.

Remixes

Download: Kidz in the Hall - "Drivin Down The Block" (Remix feat. Pusha T, Big B, and The Cool Kids)
Download: Kidz in the Hall and El-P - "Drivin' Down The Block" (Remix)
Download: Long Blondes - "Guilt" (Pantha Du Prince remix)
Download: My Brightest Diamond - "Inside a Boy" (Son Lux Remix)

Lastly, we have four worthwhile remixes. Some are more "remix-y" than other--the My Brightest Diamond in particular has a field day with the vocal track from "Inside a Boy"--while the most abstract and formless remix comes from the Pantha Du Prince remix of The Long Blondes' "Guilt". At 8 minutes plus, it might test your patience, but the song's slow, deep descent into ambient-ville is a trip worth taking; grows on you after multiple mixes. If you want a more visceral listening experience, the remixes of Kidz in the Hall's "Drivin' Down The Block" should be an ideal summer soundtrack jam. Ditto for Def-Jux head El-P's remix of the tune, in which P adds his trademark futuristic, apocalyptic, and minimalist touch to the track; dig the sudden flourish of keyboard sounds at the chorus, as well as El-P's references to current events.

Most of these songs were made available from Pitchfork, Stereogum, Thrill Jockey, Nah Right, or bands and their publicists.

Cooking With Feminists - Playlist And French Onion Recipe

Not to get all maternal on you, dear readers, but I worry about your eating habits. So, I've put together an easy, quick, fairly healthy recipe that every one of you can make. To motivate you, I've objectified a band or solo artist as each ingredient, so you can make beautiful music while you make delicious food. This recipe for French onion soup serves about 3, more if you have a side dish.

2 teaspoons unsalted butter: Download: Sharon Jones - "100 Days, 100 Nights"
2 tablespoon vegetable oil: Download: Antony and the Johnsons - "For Today I Am A Boy"
2 pounds onions (I prefer white onions because they don't make my eyes water so badly): Download: The Mountain Goats - "Sax Rohmer #1"
3 garlic cloves, minced: Download: Wilco - "Radio Cure"
1/2 teaspoon salt: Download: Jason Collett - "Out of Time"
2 tablespoons flour: Download: The Go! Team - "Grip Like A Vice"
6 cups vegetable broth: Download: Cassettes Won't Listen - "Paper Float"
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard: Download: Flogging Molly - "Within A Mile Of Home"
1 teaspoon wine vinegar (optional)
About a third of a baguette, ripped into small pieces: Download: Neutral Milk Hotel - "King of Carrot Flowers"
Gruyere or regular Swiss cheese to taste: Download: Of Montreal - "Penelope"
1 beef-flavored bullion cube (These can be found in the Mexican aisle in most grocery stores; they're completely vegetarian): Download: Robyn Hitchcock - "Olé Tarantula"

1) Chop up your onions. I recommend cutting them in half, which makes it easier to peel the skin off. When peeling an onion, you just need to remove the outer couple layers so the onion feels smooth to the touch. Once the skin is off, chop the onion so you have semi-circles of onion. The comparison between an onion and the Mountain Goats is obvious: while they may taste good, there is nothing but tears inside. I chew a piece of mint gum to combat this fact.

2) Put the butter and one tablespoon of the oil in a saucepan and melt. It'll get all smooth, much like Sharon Jones and Antony and the Johnsons. Then you add the onions.

3) Mince the garlic and add it to the onions. If you have a garlic press, use that instead. Much like Wilco's "Radio Cure," the flavor of garlic is released best when crushed. Add the salt, as well.

4) Now, put the mixture on medium heat and cook until the onions are brown and tender (about 20 minutes). You might have to add a little water to keep them from sticking to the pan.

5) Add the second tablespoon of oil and the flour. Notice how the flour sticks right to the onions and won't be shaken, much like the way the Go! Team sticks in your brain. Cook another 3 minutes or so.

6) Now add the broth. It's filling and winter-y, like the new Cassettes Won't Listen track. If you want, you can add the bullion cube at this point, too. It takes great without it, but if you're craving more of a meaty flavor, beef-flavored bullion will give you just that. Also add the mustard, here represented by Flogging Molly, because let's face it, Dave King is one salty, bitter looking dude. Let it simmer about 15 minutes on low heat. While it simmers away, preheat the broiler.

7) After 15 minutes, dish out the soup into oven-safe bowls. Pile in your croutons and put the cheese on top. Gruyere cheese is sharper than Swiss, so bear that in mind when selecting your cheese. Now put bowls on a cookie sheet and put them into the oven until the cheese gets to be golden brown and bubbly (about 4 minutes). Be careful not to touch the bowls for a couple minutes when you take them out…they're very hot.

8) Enjoy, hopefully.

Chester enjoys many normal cat activities – playing with string, sleeping in cupboards, eating – but also some unorthodox ones. He especially likes munching popcorn, purring so loud the vet can't hear his heart beat and staring at the wall. Above all, he loves rocking out and "helping" my boyfriend play the drums on Rock Band.

Up top is a list of the ten best songs for our six-toed Siberian marvel.

Eclectic indie-folk, San Francisco-based The Dodos have announced that they're playing the Cafe De Nord as part of the Noise Pop festival. The Noise Pop festival is arguably the Bay Area equivalent music festival similar to South By Southwest, insofar in that its many music groups playing in many different venues over a period of a week. The Dodos will play their live concert at Cafe Du Nord, which is undoubtedly one of the best, and certainly most intimate, places in San Francisco to see live music. The show takes place on February 28th.

The other tour dates on the band's MySpace page do not include any dates in Minneapolis--yet. As soon as they do, we'll let you know, because The Dodos are nothing but sheer revelation in concert.

Read more about the Noise Pop Festival here. In honor of the festival, I've posted a playlist of several tracks from the 10 Years Of Noise Pop compilation which came out in 2002.

From Punk News comes some information about second-wave emo band Jawbreaker sort-of reunion that happened while a documentary about the influential trio was being shot. From the Punk News article/Adam Pfahler's blog post about the reunion:

Yes, the documentary is still on, still being made. The hold up is that Keith and Tim have yet to find a distributor who is willing to pony up the closing costs to finish this thing (flights, editing time, blowing it up to 35mm. etc.). So they are doing this as a labor of love in between their regular gigs and family time. I trust this love bodes well for the finished product.

A few months back they came to SF and we got some really great footage with all three of us and Billy Anderson (who worked on Bivouac, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy and a couple one-offs as a producer/engineer). We even played together, but didn't roll footage out of both respect for the sanctity of the moment and fear that we'd suck. Anyway, I have audio of it. Maybe I'll post that some day.

Speaking of audio, up top you'll find a selection of MP3s from Jawbreaker's four albums--Unfun, Bivouac, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, and Dear You--all of which brought complex melodic structures and literate lyrics (songwriter Blake Schwarzenbach wrote heartbreaking, funny, and utterly truthful lyrics on subjects like break-ups, punk poseurs and life woes in general) to a punk template, a combination that has served as the foundation for many future pop-punk bands.

MFR's First Annual Readers Poll: 2007

Thanks to all of you readers who participated by sending in your polls! You responded in exactly the way we hoped you would. In many cases, we were pleasantly
surprised by the results. Especially noteworthy is the hometown love for acts such as alterna-rapper Brother Ali and Replacements disciples The Evening Rig. Furthermore, LCD Soundsystem being voted both one of the most innovative and overpraised albums is definitely worth pointing out (Ditto Arcade Fire). Unexpected entries from Ted Leo, Pissed Jeans, and MPLS-based Skoal Kodiak were results that were met with chagrin and delight.

Here now are the records of the year in terms of innovation; in terms of songwriting/listenability; the 5 overlooked records of the year; and the 5 overpraised records of the year. Top Ten Tracks On The Elbo.WS Chart Reviewed In 50 Words Or Less (12/14/07)

Bi-monthly, MFR reviews the Top Ten tracks on music-blog aggregator Elbo.WS in 50 words or less. For the weeks of November 30th through December 14th, here are the ten most popular songs:

Destroyer

Destroyer - "Foam Hands"

After the relaxed, sinuous arrangements which characterized the best parts of 2006's Rubies, one might be a bit hesitant to embrace the more direct, Dylan-incorporates-doo-wop, melancholy of "Foam Hands". However, even the most benumbed listener would melt once the song ascends to its triumphant conclusion. Stunning, indeed.
Grade: B+

Beach House

Beach House - "Gila"

Beach House's "Gila" positively recalls both the gentle harmonies of The Beatles Sgt Pepper-era and the hazed out atmosphere of Lou Reed when he's mellow. Ultimately though, the song's soft wistfulness and faint electronic beats only inspire faint palpitations. That's only disappointing because Beach House promised Devotion.
Grade: B-

Black Mountain

Black Mountain
– Tyrants

After two weeks, "Tyrants" still sounds like a clusterfuck of 60s psychedelic and rock influences, despite the impressive, Sabbath-esque opener. Like Mr. Burns' diseases on "The Simpsons", the heavy riffing, spacey keyboards and the folk intimacy all sort of cancel each other out, quality-wise. The grade remains the same.
Grade: C+

The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes – Aly, Walk With Me

As the listens of "Aly, Walk With Me" increase, the anticipation for The Raveonettes forthcoming effort grows higher and higher. Here's hoping that the album is bathed this much in washed-out white noise and trance-inducing sexiness. I know why Lust is used three times. Like hearing this track, once is nearly not enough.
Grade: A-

Bob Mould

Bob Mould - "The Silence Between Us"

For his first record on Anti-, the legendary Husker-Du songsmith attempts to return to his power-pop Sugar days. Mould isn't breaking new ground, but one can always appreciate a well-penned melody, a few of which "The Silence Between Us" possesses. The gratuitous electronic flourishes don't do the song any favors, though.

Yeasayer

Yeasayer - "2080"

Lord knows what will be going down in the year "2080". However, the soothing indie-melodicism and David Byrne-esque anxiety should provide enough stimulation for listeners engaged with the world as they know it today. Who knows how we'll all feel then, but judging by this track, Yeasayer's 2008 should be just fine.
Grade: B

The Dodos

The Dodos - "Fools"

The Dodos put together bouncing vocal melodies, manic guitar strumming on a single, guitar drone chord, and a pulse that would make a freight train cower. This makes one feel like they are being whisked through a delirious journey that, at the end, you'll comprehend barely at best. I say: on with the ride.
Grade: A

Robbers On High Street

Robbers On High Street - "Seasons Greetings"

There's a vague Van Morrison quality to this track which, along with kitschy sincerity of Fountains Of Wayne, makes "Seasons Greetings" somewhat appealing. This track is pretty unremarkable, but the sentiment is appreciated all the same. 'Tis the season, after all.
Grade: B-

Louis XIV

Louis XIV - "Guilt By Association"

Speaking of novelty, a band whom names itself after French royalty is probably bound for a chuckle or two. But even the Bon Scott-inspired talking orchestral breakdown (complete with harpsichord) can't save a song riddled with neo-garage-rock clichés. Meh. At least I don't have to feel guilty about anything.
Grade: C

Evangelicals

Evangelicals - "The Last Christmas On Earth"

If you plan on spending the holidays tripping on acid and sitting near a lava lamp, then this is your soundtrack. Evangelicals obviously worship at the church of shoegaze, and "The Last Christmas On Earth" is a pleasant enough amalgamation of Christmas Carol and Funeral Dirge. It's a Very Slowdive Christmas, Charlie Brown.

Playlist For Camel Cigarettes and Rolling Stone

A couple weeks back, I posted a review of Rolling Stone magazine. In the review, I noted that the issue contained a sleazy fold-out ad by Camel Cigarettes. The ad was a tour of the "Indie Rock Universe" where everyone wears black Chucks. It was designed and drawn to look like the inside of a teenager's notebook.

Stereogum then reported that not only was the ad sleazy, but it was illegal. Back in 1998, Camel (owned by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.) signed an agreement not to use cartoons to promote their products. Nine states took the "Indie Rock Universe" ads to be a violation of that and have brought suit against the company. The fine for this infraction could be as high as $100 million. Wow!

To add insult to injury, none of the bands featured in the ad were asked if they wanted their names on the ad. A full list of bands who were used in this ad and associated campaigns can be found here. The site also has a link to the original ad.

As it turns out, some of the labels whose artists were wrongfully represented by Camel are taking up arms against the cig makers. When the labels confronted the magazine, they were told that the section was an editorial, which is completely and utterly unbelievable given the spread's layout and content. Kill Rock Stars, Touch and Go and several other labels sent out an open letter to the magazine highlighting the poor taste of the ad and RS' deceptive conduct following its publication. You can view the letter here.

The labels don't want any money, just an apology. I hope they get it.

Up top is a playlist of artists who were taken advantage of by R.J. Reynolds.
