The New Kings of Leon Song Inexplicably Sounds Like Sammy Hagar

Look, I know that Kings of Leon were denied years of rockin' because of their fundamentalist upbringing (or so the legend goes), but couldn't some kind, forward-thinking soul have steered the boys clear of the red rocker? To be fair, Mr. Hagar did invaluable work with the Clinton administration regarding federal regulation of the speed limit and all that jive. But does anyone think that the man constitutionally incapable of driving 55 should be an influence on today's up-and-coming, edgy rock bands?

Apparently, the family Followill does. How else to explain "Sex on Fire", the second single from their upcoming fourth album Only By The Night? After a rather unassuming, but still quite pleasant, guitar-riff intro recalling the VU-revivalism of earlier this decade, "Fire" quickly goes south by amping up the cheese. The main problem is the vocals. For some reason, the band decided that Joe Cocker + Sammy Hagar = RAWK!. And I'm here to tell that it doesn't. It just doesn't. Also, the song is called "Sex on Fire". Bad idea to have a song title whose immediately reaction is a combination of "ouch" and "no". One shot, mas tequila? No. No Mas.

Hopefully, Only By The Night will consist more of songs like "Crawl", which smartly combined Bjork and The Who.

Corporate Rock Radio Makes Me Weep For The Future

Chip Adams of The Tripwire ran a great piece today on the current state of Alternative Radio.

Here's how it starts:

"Okay corporate radio warmongers... what in the fuck are you doing? It is a well-known fact that the state of radio, especially alternative rock radio, has been swirling down the great big commode in the sky for quite some time now. What was once a thriving format with a loyal fan base has been pushed aside, made an afterthought, homogenized and beaten to a pulp. The music that made alternative an ALTERNATIVE has been erased from playlists, with the exception of that occasional Beck track that is still floating around in a recurrent rotation" (The Tripwire).

Click here to read a fascinating, disturbing article about Lou Pearlman, the former manager of the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. Pearlman is under a whole heap of financial trouble regarding defrauding his bank, amongst other changes. In June, he was arrested in Thailand, where he was hiding out in a hotel and extradited back to the US. He's in jail right now.

But, according to Vanity Fair, who published the article that is linked to at the top of the post, there's even more sleazy behavior. Basically, Pearlman is a sexual predator. It's a frightening, fascinating read.

Salon Interview with "Leave Britney Alone!" Guy

So watch this for some context.

Then read this interview with the guy over at Salon. It's a fairly interesting read and proves that the guy was being serious or at least is doing an incredible job of pulling the wool over everyone's eyes (I doubt it though).

But when I first watched the clip, I couldn't help but think of David Cross' routine about President Bush's rhetoric regarding how terrorists hate our freedom: "...I hear George Bush say 'the terrorists hate our freedom.' You know what? I hate our freedom. Little ol' me, an American! I hate it! That's all we've done with it?"

Seriously, "lost hope for humanity".

"Dick In A Box" Takes Home an Emmy

Wow. Thanks to Stereogum for the tip on this. Last night, Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg took home the Creative Arts Emmy for their original song "Dick In A Box," which as we all know was feature on SNL last spring.


And to complicate things even further. Here is a picture of MFR Writer Peter Farrell. It's uncanny.

Kanye Vs. Fiddy

It is upon us, ladies and gents!

Tomorrow is the day that both 50 Cent's and Kanye West's new albums drop. The stakes are high – if Kanye sells more records, Fiddy will allegedly quit making music as a solo artist. I doubt his resolution will hold, but in the spirit of competition, who will it be, folks? Whose album will you buy?
