New Solid Gold - "Who You Gonna Run To" (Mel Gibson and the Pants Remix)

Download: Solid Gold - "Who You Gonna Run To" (Mel Gibson and the Pants Remix)

(via SV)

Lots of unique band names in this one, and, like the TVOTR Nat King Cole Cover, it comes courtesy of Sound Verite. It's a remix of "Who You Gonna Run To," a track that both appears on the EP of the same name, as well as their Best-Of 2008 release Bodies of Water, done by fellow distinctively monikered MPLS band Mel Gibson and the Pants. Check it out at the top of the post.

New Kanye West - "Love Lockdown" (Young Son Remix)

Download: Kanye West - "Love Lockdown" (Young Son Remix)

Young Son is an emcee from the Twin Cities who, like many rappers in the Chicago area (like Rhymefest and Lupe Fiasco) peppers his rhymes with social commentary. Flow-wise, he skews closer to Lupe's Tribe Called Quest-isms, but lyrically, he deals with the day-to-day struggles, much like Rhymefest. Recently, he remixed Kanye West's new track "Love Lockdown", the heavily re-recorded first single from 'Ye's fourth album, supposedly titled 808s and Heartbreak. Listen to it at the top of the post.

New Sally Shapiro - "Time To Let Go" (CFCF Remix)

Download: Sally Shapiro - "Time To Let Go" (CFCF Remix)

Even though the Swedes do pop like few other nationalities, 2008 has been a particularly good year for the Scandinavianally-inclined. We've seen the releases of solo debuts by Peter, Bjorn and John member Peter Morén; the second album from El Perro Del Mar; An EP by like-minded (in terms of singing style, if not musically) songstress Lykke Li, with an album to come later this year; and, lastly, but certainly not leasty, Sally Shapiro, who, on Tuesday, released the second volume of her remixes, the title of which is Remix Romance Vol 2. I know, real big Shyamalan twist there, right?

The release marks the debut of the digital label of Paper Bag Records. Read more about the label's newfound digital path here. As far as songs from the record are concerned, up at the top, you can find the remix of Shapiro's tune "Time To Let Go" by Montreal-based CFCF. As far as the sound of the song is concerned, the track splits the difference between The Tom-Tom Club and "Axel F"; CFCF co-opt the grooves of the former, while adding synth-lines similar to the latter.

Bon Iver Remixes The Rosebuds

Download: The Rosebuds - "Get Up and Get Out" (Bon Iver Remix)

We never thought Bon Iver to be the remixing type, but this re-imagining of The Rosebuds' "Get Up and Get Out" obviously proves us wrong. The track is taken from the free remix record that Merge Records gave away on their website. You can listen to Bon Iver's remix at the top of the post, and download the remix album here.

New Music: The Raveonettes - Dead Sound (Peter Holstrom and Jeremy Sherrer Remix)

Download: The Raveonettes - "Dead Sound" (Peter Holmstrom and Jeremy Sherrer remix)

The Raveonettes, in this writer's humble opinion have released the first great record of the year with Lust Lust Lust, their fourth. Expect a review of it up in the next day or so. In the meantime, you can stream a few songs over at the band's MySpace Page.

Originally, the album was streaming in full. Those of you who were able to hear the full thing (including this reviewer, who, luckily, took a shit-ton of notes on the whole she-bang, and thus will be able to complete the review), count yourselves lucky. For the rest of you, if you like what you hear, then fantastic. But you're going to have to wait a week to purchase it. Lust Lust Lust is out February 19th. In the meantime, though, check out a remix of Lust single "Dead Sound", as done by Peter Holstrom and Jeremy Sherrer.

The Raveonettes play the 7th Street Entry on March 17th. Tickets are 21+ and will set you back $15. Buy them here.

New Music: Andrew Bird - "Imitosis" (Four Tet Remix)

Download: Andrew Bird - "Imitosis" (Four Tet Remix)

Andrew Bird has been having a fine year in 2007. In the first part of the year, he put out Armchair Apocrapha, which has been included on a couple of year-end best-of lists and surely will be on more to come. He's opened for Wilco (in Minneapolis to boot), played for Daytrotter, toured the world, headlined the Hideout Block Party, and will play two shows at the Guthrie on Dec. 14th and 15th before starting 2008 with a tour of Australia and New Zealand. And, as we all know, New Zealand definitely likes the rock the party.

But before doing all that, Bird has one musical treat for you, the listener, and that's UK electronic act Four Tet (more specifically, Kieran Hebden) doing a remix of AA track "Imitosis". All remixes are a little too busy, in my ears, but this track rearranges the beat and melody of Bird's original in an admittedly interesting way. What's odd is that a guitar line which sounds similar to "Don't Fear The Reaper" has been added. It fits the song nicely, but I couldn't help but keep picturing Will Ferrell going nuts with the cowbell while I was hearing the track. Maybe that can happen on the "Fiery Crash" remix?

If you've got a fever and the only prescription is more Andrew Bird, then listen to the "Imitosis" remix at the top of the post.

Buy tickets for the Guthrie shows next week here and purchase Armchair Apocrapha at your friendly neighborhood brick-and-mortar independent music store.

Glorious Monster – Upcoming EP Release & Christmas Tune

Download: Glorious Monster - "In The Movies"

Glorious Monster
has recently put up their version of "O Holy Night", a song which will be included on their upcoming remix EP, on their MySpace page. I’m not a huge fan of Christmas tunes in general, simply because of their ubiquitousness this time of year; not only are holiday songs played from Thanksgiving to New Years, but the same, recycled songs plague every retail store, every grocery store, and just about every commercial on television. However, Glorious Monster’s version of this song is definitely unique; it’s not screaming with yuletide overkill.

The tune begins with a somber yet sweet vocal courtesy of Brian Casey with only the slightest single humming tone hanging demurely in the background. Then, in grand Glorious Monster fashion, the song picks up slowly, but surely, with a crescendo of light electronic sound that makes the traditional seem new, fresh, and modern. The main elements of the song sound the same, it stays quiet and dreamlike, with the slightest touch of electronic rhythm that brings the song to life. It’s a melancholy twist on the original that’s a refreshing change of pace from the ridiculously chipper tunes to which we’re all so accustomed at Christmastime.

Although not yet available for download, you can still listen to "O Holy Night" here.

Glorious Monster will be holding a release party for their In the Movies remix EP this Saturday, December 8 at Nomad with NOBOT and Estate. Show starts at 9pm, $5 cover, 21+.

Glorious Monster Cover David Bowie On New EP

Download: Glorious Monster - "In The Movies"
Download: Glorious Monster - "In The Movies Remix"

Minneapolis ambient indie-rockers Glorious Monster have announced that they will be putting out a remix EP at the end of the year. The EP will boast the imaginative title In The Movies Remix EP (at least the consumer knows what they're getting) and will consists of 8 tracks. Two of those tracks have been posted on the band's MySpace Page. The first is a remix of the track "In The Movies", which originally appeared on last year's Adventures On Earth and the second is a cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity". It's a fantastical version of a song that originally had quite a lot of fantastical elements to it. You can listen to the band's version of the Bowie classic here.

In addition to those tasty morsels, the Movies EP will contain remixes of Earth tracks "Photographs" and "Now You Are". The set will be rounded out by a cover of Christmas standard "O Holy Night".

That final track will be a nice winter-y treat by the time the band's CD Release party comes around. Glorious Monster will be celebrating the release of the EP on Dec. 8th at the Nomad. The show is 21+, starts at 9 p.m. and will cost you 5 bucks.

Here's the video for "In The Movies" which will also be available on the EP:
