Grizzly Bear, Wilco Debut New Material At Lollapalooza 2008

(Wilco - "One Wing" - Live at Lollapalooza 2008)

Despite the fact that its in my backyard, I opted not to attended Lollapalooza this year, due to high ticket prices and the fact that I'd seen most of the main acts at Lollapalooza 2006. But, the more and more videos I see from the Midwest destination fest being upload, the more I start to question the wisdom of that decision (and then I remember: oh yeah, when was the last time I had 200 bones to spare?).

Still, the people who did go--and there were a lot of them--got to see (rather, are seeing) some amazing things. Two of the more noteworthy sights were new songs debuted by both Grizzly Bear and Wilco. Stereogum had the scoop on them both. "One Wing", Wilco's new song described by S-Gum as a "meandering rocker with a triple axe-explosion" (wasn't that "Impossible Germany?"), was
premiered by the site. As far as Grizzly Bear is concerned, the already leaked "Two Weeks" was amongst four new songs played the group. Again, Stereogum's got the scoop, and you can read about it here.

As for the rest of the fest, here are some notable clips I found. Obvious, video and audio quality vary:

(Radiohead - "Everything In Its Right Place/Fake Plastic Trees")

(Rage Against The Machine - "Testify")

(Rage Against The Machine - Zack De la Rocha's Rant during "Wake Up")

(The Cool Kids - "Don't Trip")

(Bloc Party - "Banquet")

(Duffy - "Warwick Avenue")

(Lupe Fiasco - "Intro/Kick Push")

(CSS - "Left Behind")

More here. And, undoubtedly, more to come.

Jim DeRogatis Pisses Off Perry Ferrell In Glorious Fashion (Lollapalooza Line-Up Leaked!)

Jim DeRogatis, the lovable scamp who co-hosts "Sound Opinions" and writes about music for the Chicago Sun Times, has challenged Lollapalooza founder Perry Ferrell (I so wish it was "feral") before, and the former Jane's Addiction leader has responded with his own special retorts, but lord knows what will happen now the D-Rog has gone ahead and leaked the entire 2008 Lollapalooza line-up on his Sun-Times Blog. Perhaps Ferrell will now make us listen to Satellite Party sets for nigh on two hours, or subject us to his nonsensical, stoned-out philosophical treatises about the environment. Don't get me wrong, I've made plenty of those in my day. I've just had the good judgment to not do so in front of 100,000 drunk, sunburned people.

The Chicago-heavy lineup, both large (Kanye West, Wilco, Lupe Fiasco) and small (OFFICE, Kid Sister, The Cool Kids), is always appreciated but, sadly, there's only one Minnesotan act, Mason Jennings. Boo-urns, I say.

Pearl Jam: Their World. Censored.

That is, according to Salon's Machinist blog. Read the article - which details how a certain largest phone company in the entire planet removed political content from Pearl Jam's set at Lollapalooza from the webcast that the company did of the festival here.

A quick summation of the controversy given by the article:
Anyone who was at Sunday's Pearl Jam show closing the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago would have seen the band in a political mood.,,(i)n the middle of a performance of "Daughter," Vedder sang "George Bush, leave this world alone" and "George Bush find yourself another home" to the tune of "Another Brick in the Wall."

But if you were at home listening to the show on the Webcast...you would have missed those lines..(They) say its monitor did so by mistake -- what a strangely precise and politically convenient mistake!

I don't doubt that mistakes happen - heck, how could they not, considering the scope of a festival the size of Lollapalooza and the technology required in order to webcast it. That said, if you take into account the dubious actions that AT and T (by the way, what's the deal with Blogger not allowing the "and" character?) has made as a company - here, here and here - then the censorship charge is much more plausible.

But enough political talk and on to the political music. Here are some live Pearl Jam MP3s, a track from b-sides collection Lost Dogs and a few songs from last year's self-titled set. All the songs on this playlist are politically charged, to some degree:

My Morning Jacket to play with Chicago Youth Orchestra at Lollapalooza

Download: My Morning Jacket - "Wordless Chorus"

Billboard Magazine reports that the Louisville combo will play with the Chicago Youth Orchestra for the second time (the first time was at a show last year at Chicago venue The Riviera) at Lollapalooza, on August 5th, 2007, in Grant Park. In the article, MMJ guitarist Carl Broemel revels the genesis of the collaboration, and gives vague details about when they will record the follow-up to 2005's stellar "Z."

Color me jealous of the kids in the Chicago Youth Orchestra. I wish I got to do something that cool when I was that age. I would totally have rocked out on the upright bass for MMJ. Consider yourselves lucky, CYO!
