LARPERS Caught by Google Street View

Two battling LARPERS were caught on camera by Google Street View. I'm not kidding. Check it out here. After laughing for a good spell, I began to think about LARPing, and what it could mean to me: you know, the swords, the shields, the never-ending lore. So, I put a mix together of songs that I would pipe into my medieval helmet whilst I don the appropriate garb, wield a battle axe, and smite my enemies.

Please, imagine a montage of me running through fields with a sword slaying some shit up while this playlist is rocking me to victory.

Headlights Perform "Cherry Tulips" Live on Yahoo's "Who's Next" Series

The Champaign, IL-based pop quintet Headlights are in the midst of a tour that now sees them in the Midwest (not MPLS, though there are shows aplenty in Chicago), but will eventually take them to the East Coast and this mythical place called..."Canada". Hmm. Sounds dubious to me.




What isn't dubious, however, is that the group managed to squeeze in a little to make Ian Anderson's heart fill with joy perform a song from their second record (their latest) Some Stopping, Some Racing. The song, you'll be none too surprised to find out, is "Cherry Tulips". That's probably the most obvious choice but, hey, there are records to promote. Watch the band perform an acoustic version of the song at the top of the post. While you are there, listen to two other Headlights tracks, including one from Racing, a song called "Market Girl". Good times.

Now here comes something worth getting excited about. Champaign, IL natives Headlights are coming out with their second full-length album on Feb. 19 on Polyvinyl Records.

Headlights' first full-length, "Kill Them With Kindness," was breathtaking. In fact, I think we gave it an "A" last year. If "Cherry Lips" is any indication, this will be a doozy.

In regards to the new record, Headlight Tristan Wraight told Luna Park that they are taking a different approach to making this one.

“It can really exhaust your ear if there’s a huge amount of stuff happening all the time, and that’s one of the things that we learned on Kill Them With Kindness,” Wraight said. “We really love that record and we’re really proud of it, but we also feel a little bit worn out after we listen to it because there’s always so much going on. We just wanted a few opportunities for people who are listening to the record to have a break and have a little bit of small space and a little bit of small sounds happening.”

Headlights/Page France at the 7th St. Entry

Headlights played at the 7th St. Entry last night and I was fortunate to catch it. All of the excessive touring Headlights has been doing has definitely paid off. They own their instruments and their performance - their live act has definitely become something bigger than just playing to sound like their record.

I was also super impressed by Page France. The Maryland-natives really caught me by surprise - expect a review in the near future.

Headlights - "TV"

Kill Them With Kindness, the debut full-length from Champaign, Ill. natives Headlights, was massively overlooked in 2006. The album is dynamic and creative, two distinctive traits that pull the album in many directions, which was seen as unfocused, but I see as experimental.

Headlights have a hard time escaping comparisons to Stars, but I actually think Headlights are the better of the two – it's true. Mainly because Headlights accomplish what few bands can: create dark moods and movements within the framework of a pop song and actually keep things interesting.

The record is comprised of guy-girl harmonies (adorable ones, mind you) and reminds of an era when shoe-gazers were in, while being both graceful and just damn pretty.

Most-of-the-time lead-singer Erin Fein has a great voice. Breathy and pretty, Fein brings you in with her sad vocal cadences and equally as sad observations of the world.

Every song on the album has something to offer, but this is my favorite.

Furthermore, Headlights are playing at the 7th St. Entry this Wednesday (April 4) at 9 p.m. Be there or be LAME!
