Download: Jenny Dalton - "Looted Fires"

What: "Home for the Holidays" music show
Who: Jenny Dalton & James Apollo (in town from NYC)
When: Saturday, December 27 at 9:30 pm
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

Local songstress Jenny Dalton has announced a free holiday show at the Kitty Cat Klub. On Saturday, December 27th, the carrier of Rusalka's Umbrella will hit the stage with fellow songwriter James Apollo at 9:30 p.m. for what will be undoubtedly a evening of fine holiday music. The water subtext prevalent in Umbrella will be an apt one for the evening, with both Jesus' birth two days before, and with everyone freezing their huevos rancheros off because of a wide variety of winter conditions.

See above for more details.

Doomtree Headline Free "Best of City Pages" Show, Post Exclusive Remix on MySpace

There probably isn't a more apt way of celebrating your win as City Pages "Best Concert of the past 12 months" than putting on a live show, and Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree are about to demonstrate tonight why they won that award. The show at First Ave. is absolutely free, but 21+. Flier above has all of the pertinent details.

To get a taste of what you'll be in for, check out this video that The Current uploaded of the hip-hop group performing their song "Stand Up" at. The footage was taken from the award-winning blowout at First Ave. last year:

Also playing with Doomtree will be indie-rockers The Alarmists and Country-tinged romanticists Romantica.

In other Doomtree news, the band posted an exclusive mash-up of their song "Slow Burn" on their MySpace Page. Check it out by clicking the hyperlink in the previous sentance.

Tonight: Daughters of the Sun at the Uptown Bar

Download: Daughters Of The Sun - "Follow Smoke"
Download: Aunt Dracula - "Mongo" (via Culture Bully

There are those amongst us who say that there's no such thing as a free lunch. Those people clearly need to open up their schedule, because while there may be no such thing as a free mid-day meal, the evening is looking particularly stellar. That is especially the case tonight, when MPLS psych-pop trio, and MFR favorite, Daughters of the Sun play a free show tonight at the Uptown Bar and Cafe. Doors are at 9 p.m. and the show is 21+. Playing with DotS will be Aunt Dracula and Mike Lewis/Jeremy Ylvisaker.

Free Faux Jean Show Tonight At The Triple Rock

(Faux Jean pic via How Was The Show?)

Download: Faux Jean - "The Ballad of Kim & Thurston"

The holiday season is finally over, which means that, if you're like anyone else, you dropped a small fortune in buying gifts for friends and loved ones. Which also means that, for the next few months, you'll be pinching your pennies and then some. So that means that live music is more or less out of the question. That is, of course, unless said music is absolutely free.

That's the case with tonight's Faux Jean show at the Triple Rock. Doors are at 9 p.m. for the 21+ show. Faux Jean are wholly devoted to 60s revivalism in the same way that The Brian Jonestown Massacre or First Communion Afterparty are. The Minneapolis-based group impressively puts a psychedelic spin on both the joyous pop-rock that characterized The Beatles' early work and Bob Dylan's antagonistic folk-rock (particularly on "Fuck The Formula", which you can listen to at the top of the post). These stylistic touches are delivered with Lou Reed's sing-speak snarl, and that helps give the material a healthy dose of attitude. Of course, any comparisons to music legends past seem moot in the face of the beautiful, shimmering, and immaculately gorgeous "File", one of the many songs from 2007's The Mongolian Invasion, Pt. 1, a collection of 4-track demos recorded in the past ten years. Also opening are wistful pop-rock group The Brutes--who, despite their name, are quite gentile--and eccentric indie-tronic/power-pop band Plastic Chord.

Once again, the show at the T-Rock is 21+, free, and doors are at 9 p.m.

Free Gospel Gossip Show Tonight At The Triple Rock

Download: Gospel Gossip - "Wind"
Download: The Chambermaids - "Park"
Stream Kill To Kill's music at their MySpace Page
Download: Austin Scarlett - "Filling The Void"

MFR-favorite Gospel Gossip ended 2007 on quite the high note, what with the release of their debut album, Sing Into My Mouth, a City Pages feature and gobs of deserved ink for their music. Needless to say, 2008 looks very promising for the Northfield, MN, quartet, and the band seems to be wasting no time in ringing in the new year with a flurry of activity.

First off is a free show tonight at the Triple Rock, along with fellow MPLS like neo-post-punk inspired The Chambermaids (think of a less angular Mission Of Burma). Also playing are lo-fi indie-rockers Kill To Kill, whose treble-heavy guitar tones and vocals are reminiscent of early Sleater-Kinney or Heavens To Betsy, and Joy Division-inspired Austin Scarlett.

Doors are at 9 p.m for the 21+ show. Those of you who aren't of age, fret not, because the day after the T-Rock show (i.e., tomorrow), the band will be stopping by the Radio K studios for a performance on the station's local music day. Set your radio dials to 106.5 (Minneapolis) and 100.7 (St. Paul) around 4 p.m. to hear GG in action.

Also worth mentioning is that Gospel Gossip will be preaching the good news at First Avenue's Best New Bands Of 2007, along with fellow MFR-favs To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie, Gay Witch Abortion, and a whole host of other acts*. Check out the full line-up here. Tickets for the 18+ show are $7 dollars and can be bought here.
