MFR's Top Ten Best Local Records of 2008
2008 was a boundless year for creativity in the MPLS local music scene, with hip-hop and electronic-leaning groups being responsible for most of the sonic highlights throughout the year. However, there was plenty of room leftover for folk-gypsy wanderings, epic nouveau-psychedelia, and a gloriously righteous exercise in lo-fi punk. But number one belongs to a veteran who set forth another variation of a consistent sound--with thrilling results. Here's MFR's list of the top ten local records of 2008:

Muja! Solid addition. Bold move w/ no Atmos, though.

Truth be told, I like "Strictly Leakage" more than "WLGYLYPTSG". I think the latter is somewhat overrated. It's a very solid listen, but it definitely loses steam toward the later half of the album, and as much as I enjoy Slug's storytelling efforts, all of the narratives just started to bleed into one over the course of the record. Besides, "YGM" from Leakage? That track srsly pwns, to quote the kids.
yo' word up,heart your list!
Solid Gold's "Who You Gonna Run To?" is delicious like yo'too
Minneapolis in the buildin' 2009 lookin fresh.
Gospel Gossip? Or was that last year?

GG released their debut in early December 2007 (as opposed to Strictly Leakage, which was released on December 31st), and we caught it just in time to add it to our list. I did notice that it was on Radio K's list though.
Where's the Haley Bonar love!?
Kitten Forever is weak. Sounding like Kathleen Hannah stopped being cool in 1993.
no weakness in these women and they continue to prove that every show.
theirs is definitely my no. 1 local album of the year.
too bad the singer of kf sounds nothing like kathleen hannah, and that some people never know how expand their musical knowledge repertoire to have the capacity to compare girl-fronted bands to anyone other than bikini kill.
