Soft are a New York based quintet that recall the best elements of 90s Brit-pop, such as big choruses and hooky melodies, and shoegaze, like atmospheric production, vocals low in the mix, and lots of fuzzy, delay-and-reverb-drenched guitars, to create memorable pastiches of punchy space-pop. I bought their self-released 2005 EP last fall and was impressed with the more ethereal material and less so with the more direct, verse-chorus-verse songs. I made a note to myself to keep up with the band and see if they would move in a pop direction or a more ambient direction.
Based on "Dumb Blood", the first single from the band's first full-length, which is entitled Gone Faded. If the first single is representative of what's one the rest of the album, expect more well-crafted, catchy Stone Roses-style songs with just a hint of sonic experimentation.
At the top of the post, you'll find an MP3 of "Dumb Blood" plus two more from their first EP.
Gone Faded is out on Oct. 23rd. Pre-order the album here.
