Video Digest: New Vids Ahoy!

This week was super busy for new video releases (at least for bands that I care about). Here are my three favorites from the week:

The White Stripes- “You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)”

Personally, I’ve always felt like the White Stripes’ songs stand on their own, without visuals. Still, they have a history of making really good videos. “You Don’t Know What Love Is” is a great video simply for playing up the Meg/Jack dynamic so much. I’ve always admired their ability to be a cohesive unit despite splitting up, and this video is a really nice homage to that fact.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy - “The Seedling”

Will Oldham, a.k.a Bonnie “Prince” Billy, is someone whose career is super hard to talk about. It always seems from the buzz around him and the undying admiration of his fans that he’s about to make it big, but then never seems to get there. “The Seedling” is a great, great song, but I’m undecided about the video. I think there are some really beautiful frames and images in it, especially in the first half. On the other hand, there are a lot of segments that dance on the line between campy and artistic, and between organic and suburban-stoner-organic.

Voxtrot - "Firecracker"

I think everyone on this blog wants Voxtrot to do well. “Firecracker” is probably my favorite song from their self-titled and I think it’s an excellent choice for a single. The cinematic, plot-driven part of the video is pretty cliché, but the shots of the band totally keep the whole operation afloat. The band shots have amazing lighting and are very well-edited.
