Smashing Pumpkins to Release Four Versions of "Zeitgeist"
The Tripwire posted today that Zeitgeist (out on July 17) is coming out in four different manifestations (listed below). The different track listings will be available depending on where you purchase the album (an independent store, a big box chain, or iTunes). But what gets me is that it appears that the big box store and iTunes versions are "better" (have more tracks) than then the indie version. So, this would beg the argument that the mighty SP may be trying to persuade their listeners to support large chains rather than indies. Thoughts? Comment back on this.

Wow. That album is going to have to be the greatest and best album ever to justify that kind of hype. And based on Zwan and later Pumpkin's records, I'm not willing to bet my lunch money on it.
And unless those extra big box/iTunes tracks are actually rants about how people shouldn't buy music from Best Buy, that decision is 100% bogus.
i think it's lame, but only to a certain degree. the problem is that indie kids aren't really buying records anymore--they're downloading them. to deal with that reality, major bands like the pumpkins are going to try and entice potential customers to actually purchase the record by sweetening the deal with extra tracks, different album sleeves, etc. but you can't orchestrate a major promotion of this kind with a bunch of independent record stores that, frankly, are mostly concentrated in major cities. for better of for worse, kids in the 'burbs and the rest of rural america have access to target and wal-mart, but they don't necessarily have access to a store like treehouse records. the cynical side of me thinks that the people who will participate in this publicity stunt are the die-hard fans, while the rest of the public will grab whatever copy of the album is most convenient and pick up the scraps on the net. we're going to see more and more of this stuff as major labels struggle to convince a demographic besides the really old and really young to start buying more records.
but it sucks. because independent record stores are sweet.

This is super lame. I could see having an in-store only version of the album, but this obviously gives Target, Best Buy and iTunes an advantage. If anything, they should release a super-awesome quadruple decker vinyl showboat just for the little guys. I guess the Pumpkins did reunite for one reason: Corgan's empty checking account (which was my suspicion, and the reason why I've been so removed from the news on this album).
But then again, I'm contributing to the death of the local record store by making the vast majority of my non-vinyl purchases online, so I can't really talk.
